As I was typing “seven dresses” the movie “27 Dresses” surfaced in my head. (Any of you love that movie as much me??) It brought a smile to my face because I was a bridesmaid last week for my new sister-in-law and enjoyed it so much. Love and romance are two of my favorite things and of course hair/makeup/dresses= major bonus!
Fortunately tonight I’m only writing about seven and not twenty-seven dresses :). Continuing with my “build your wardrobe” series (I’ve posted about staple tops, jeans, jackets, shoes, accessories and bags over the last few months), here are seven dresses I’m convinced every girl needs for a well-rounded closet:
- The little black dress. When choosing your LBD, go with a sleeveless or basic cap sleeve style that can be accessorized for different occasions (example here).
- The work dress. If you work in an office, a simple but smartly fitted dress is a must. Choose one that grazes your knees and can easily be layered with a blazer but is also office-appropriate on its own, such as this.
- The sweater dress. I know, I know: it’s hard to think of sweater dresses in June! While this style is more seasonal to Fall and Winter, a neutral sweater dress is amazing for those two seasons. Pair it with tights and heels for work or with boots and a scarf on the weekends. A great neutral option on sale can be found here.
- The cocktail dress. Whether or not it’s wedding season, sooner or later we all need a “dressier” dress for more formal occasions. I picked up this gorgeous lace dress by Misguided for my brother and sister-in-law’s rehearsal dinner. I love the unique inverted V cut front and the gorgeous on-trend lace.
Dress // Purse (becomes a clutch when strap is tucked in) - The maxi. A maxi dress is a perfectly effortless alternative to shorts and a tee shirt. Think of this dress as your ticket to instant and effortless style. I recently scooped up this maxi dress from Asos and really like how comfortable and flattering it is.
- The basic slip dress. A slip dress is great for a slightly dressier casual look. Belt it and go or layer it with your favorite denim or utility jacket.
- The sundress. This style is perfect for picnics, 4th of July outings, or really any summer day. Sundresses are meant to be worn on their own rather than layered so I like to play around with patterns when it comes to these. I’m loving the floral dress trend right now and have been obsessed with this little yellow sundress:
To maximize your options, choose styles 1-6 in solid colors that can easily be accessorized differently to create various looks. Basic colors like black, navy, white, or cream are particularly great for this as they can easily be paired with more colorful or “flashy” accessories.
