8 Things You May Not Know About Me

Happy Friday, gals! I’m fighting sleep so badly right now (which is lame I know, considering it’s 10pm on Friday…mom life/work life/blog life for ya) but I want to be consistent with my Monday/Wednesday/Friday blogging schedule as I have promised you in the past.

When I first started this blog last August, most of the people who read it were family and friends who knew me. Over the course of this year though as more and more of you have reached out (something that makes my day- connecting with you guys is the most fulfilling part about blogging for me), it’s made me aware that for many of you we haven’t had the chance yet to get to know each other. With that in mind, I thought it would be fun to do a “10 Things You May Not Know About Me” to break that metaphorical ice. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I’m a pretty open book so some of these things go well beneath the surface.

  1. I hate scary movies. I can’t handle them! Halloween has painfully reminded me of this. I think it’s because I am so impressionable, and scary movies have a way of shaking me at my core and making me feel like the stuff I see in the movie will happen to me. The first time I watched Final Destination I wouldn’t run on the treadmill for days after because I was worried the treadmill would act up and trip me to death. Lol!
  2. I’ve lived in 11 different states. When I tell people, they ask if my dad was in the military, and he actually wasn’t. I was born in Florida and when I was five we moved to Vermont for my dad’s job as a professor. We rented homes in Vermont and New Hampshire, and when I was a teenager my dad got a six month teaching exchange (called a sabbatical) in Colorado, so we went out there and came back home to New England. When I turned 18 I went to college in New York but interned in Massachusetts, then at 22 I moved out to the San Francisco area for my first “big girl” job. I was in California for a little while, then a job cropped up in Hawaii, so I moved out there (I couldn’t say no!). Hawaii is where I met Ridge. After two years in Hawaii, I moved to North Carolina since two of my three brothers had settled there and I wanted to be closer to family since Juliana was on the way. Now we live in South Carolina, just outside Charlotte. It’s been a fun little trip halfway (or maybe a third of the way, ha) around the world, but after everywhere I’ve lived Charlotte is the place that feels like home. The thing I love most about living in all these places and making close friends along the way is how much perspective it’s given me on the world, on life, and on different sub cultures. It helps me feel like I can relate better to people I meet from other areas of the country and I love that.

  1. I struggle with insomnia. I’ve slept badly on and off for a while, but since starting this blog my insomnia has gotten worse. I’ll finally hit the sheets late, exhausted after staying up to write a post, then find myself unable to fall asleep. My mind is always going and sometimes I struggle to get it to “turn off”. I have gotten better about avoiding big triggers, like coffee after 12pm, but it doesn’t totally fix the problem and herbal remedies unfortunately haven’t done it for me. Right now it’s a cycle of a few days of not sleeping well, followed by a night or two of great sleep once I hit exhaustion, then more bad sleep. I think in time it’ll get better though as I am making an effort to plan out my posts and avoid late these late nights as much as I can.
  2. I sell ice cream and iced tea for a living. I work for a company called Turkey Hill Dairy as a National Account Manager. I manage Turkey Hill’s business in what we call the Drug, Value, and Club channels (like CVS, Dollar Tree, and Costco) so I travel regularly to meet with these customers to review our sales, identify opportunities to grow them, and “sell in” the new items our company comes out with each year. It’s hard work, but it’s a lot of fun! The best and worst part of my job is that I travel one or two days a week. It’s the best part because I love love love exploring other cities, but at the same time leaving Juliana is really difficult.

  1. I overthink everything. You name it, I overthink it. ๐Ÿ™‚ Ridge will tell me “Baby, you’re in your head way too much” and he’s right! I have always analyzed everything- I like taking what I see and figuring out what’s beneath the surface. Being able to do that with people has helped me with my job in a sales/relationship management role. Analyzing what I observe has also helped me figure out the mechanics of blogging and what the successful bloggers do and don’t do. The downside though is #3 above. ๐Ÿ™‚
  2. I was a single mom for three years. Ridge and I don’t have the most traditional love story, but it all worked out in the end. Being a single mom is the hardest thing in the world but  it made me a lot stronger (+ more immune to sleep deprivation…lol!) and made me so much more appreciative of my little family with Ridge and Juliana. You can read our full story here and a little back story on my dating history here. ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. I’m the most uncoordinated person in the world. I absolutely LOVE dance but can’t dance in synchrony to save my life. When I was in college, my sorority was putting on a dance skit for recruitment and they made me part of it. As much as I tried, I couldn’t remember the sequence and finally asked my friend who was arranging it to choreograph me out. I have Juliana in ballet already and I hope she doesn’t follow in my footsteps, ha!
  2. Just like everyone, I have insecurities about my body. For me, these things are my skin (I’ve struggled with acne since I was a teenager), my nose, and my stomach. I have learned though to embrace who I am, and in the last few years have truly become really comfortable in my own skin. In this world where we are subtly (or not so subtly) told that beauty lies in a certain size or shape, I think blogging can be a wonderful outlet to help everyday girls look and feel their best. It’s how I’ve learned a lot of my beauty tips and where I hope to share them with you too.

This ended up being longer than I planned! But I hope it helped you get to know me a little better and I’d love to get to know you also. <3

XO,

Terra

Also I see that l have some similarities as you especially with insomnia on and off and I have been told that I over think things or think too much! Thank you for sharing this fun postโค๏ธ xo
