You’re tired of the jeans you have sagging and bagging so you go shopping. A few try ons later and perhaps you’ve found a pair that makes you look and feel AH-mazing. You bring them home and wear on repeat. After a few weeks they start to lose their shape- especially in the back. We’ve all been there (y’all know I have more than once!). So how do you keep your jeans from stretching out?
It turns out there are two things that can/will have a HUGE impact on whether your jeans fit and don’t bag over time.
- Buy ’em tight. I know this may sound strange (aren’t we supposed to buy jeans that fit?) but because most pairs contain spandex (sometimes tagged as ‘elastane’ or ‘polyurethane’) they’re almost guaranteed to stretch out over time. Also, the spandex amount matters- the more spandex a pair contains the tighter you want to buy them because they will stretch out even more over time. 1%-2% spandex is pretty typical and 3% is very stretchy…think bordering jeggings territory.
- Don’t dry them. If they contain spandex, that is. Heat breaks down spandex fibers a lot more quickly which makes the fabric not hold up and keep its shape as well as it could. Keep your jeans from stretching out by hanging them to dry. As a matter of fact, any sort of heat isn’t good if your jeans are higher on the spandex spectrum so washing in cold water is always a safer bet.
Let me know if this helps to keep your jeans from streching out…I can’t wait to hear from you!

PS The Paige pair I’m wearing here are about my favorite white jeans to date. I got to shoot this look with Nicole Mickle in Charleston last weekend and ALL I could think of was how perfect they would be for Summer Sunday brunch (Charleston or anywhere else!)
