Capsule Wardrobe Day 1

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas! Ridge, Juliana and I spent it with his family. It was full of awesome food, sweet gifts, and most of all wonderful people. There was so much leading up to Christmas this year that it felt a little weird waking up this morning to the day after Christmas! But it was a relaxing end a long and wonderful weekend…

….and the first day of my Capsule Wardrobe Challenge! (See my last post for more details.) This weekend I finally finished selecting the pieces for my capsule. I started creating a visual of all my items using Polyvore’s template, but unfortunately I can’t finish it tonight. I promise I’ll complete and share with my very next post though. Since I don’t have the item spread tonight, I thought instead I’d share a few things I’ve learned so far in the process.

  1. Creating the capsule forced me to look at each piece in my wardrobe differently and stretch my creativity on how items could be combined. I tried each item being many different ways, some of which I’d never thought of before. I realized I could wear a tee under a strappy LBD, and that a sheer white lace top I’d only worn over a white tank looked great over other colors too.
  2. It helped me clearly identify true “wardrobe builders”, e.g., a black blazer, a chambray button up, the perfect leather jacket, a basic long sleeve striped top. It also helped me realize what wardrobe builders I may want to get once my challenge is over. For example, I realized a neutral-colored puffer vest and a striped midi dress are items I could style so many different ways.
  3. Selecting items for a capsule wardrobe is hard. Well, at least it was harder than I anticipated! Every item needed to be extremely versatile but at the same time interesting/different enough to add something to the collection. I wanted some items to not just “go” with the rest but have enough character to help “make” an outfit. This took more thought than I initially anticipated.
  4. Now that I have the capsule created, putting outfits together is so fast and easy! I threw a few together for fun this afternoon…it didn’t take any time or effort to come up with some really cute looks. Well, wasn’t this the whole point of creating a capsule wardrobe? Why, yes it was…but for some reason I’m still tickled to see how well it works in actuality :).

Ok, enough talking…here are a few of the outfits I threw together this afternoon from the capsule. Let me know what you think!
