Capsule Wardrobe Challenge

Only 2 days left till Christmas…can you believe? I finally finished my Christmas shopping Tuesday and I’m so glad to have it complete! Now I can just look forward to the 25th and the wonderful memories to be made.

While Christmas shopping last week I turned on the radio and listened to a fascinating discussion about just the opposite of what I was doing. The topic was “minimalism” and the guests were discussing how they eliminated “things” from their life to create more space for family, friends, new experiences, etc. One of the guys started by boxing up everything he owned then taking out only what he needed. After several weeks he’d only unboxed 20% of his items so he gave the rest away.

That got me thinking about my wardrobe. As someone who loves fashion-and blogs about it- I shop frequently, and over time I’ve accumulated a sizeable collection. I think of the versatility of a piece and how it builds my closet before a purchase, but to be honest I’m not sure I need as many clothes as I have.

Enter a capsule wardrobe: a streamlined collection of high quality pieces that can be worn interchangeably, saving money, closet space and time. I’d heard of the concept, but my new intrigue with minimalism got me actually thinking about it. When reading up, one of the biggest advantages  seemed to be how much time it saves getting dressed. Hmm…something that could save me time without compromising fashion? I gotta try this! I challenged myself to build my own capsule and stick to it for an entire month. Here’s what I’m thinking:

  • 33 items total: 3 short sleeve shirts, 3 tanks, 3 long sleeve shirts, 3 pairs of pants, 3 pairs of heels, 3 pairs of boots, 3 pairs of flats, 3 jackets, 3 sweaters, 3 handbags, and 3 “other” (probably 1 dress, 1 skits, and 1 pair leggings). Accessories, camis, workout clothes, and pajamas aren’t included in this number.

I’ve picked many of the items but this weekend I’ll finish my selections. Every item that makes the cut has to be extremely versatile so it pairs with everything else, creating a near-infinite number of outfit combinations (and saving a whole lot of time!) For the three jackets I’ve chosen my utility jacket, my leather jacket, and my black blazer (similar here). In the photos below I styled the utility jacket and blazer with some tops and bottoms that will also be part of the capsule.

Starting 12/26/17 I’m going to wear only capsule items until 1/25/17. My goal is to post an “outfit of the day” photo on Instagram each day during this challenge so you can see how pieces are interchanged. If you’re curious, make sure to follow along on Instagram at fifteenminutestoflawless!

What do you think of the capsule wardrobe idea? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Terra
